It all started when Ms. Borges walked into Petco on April 18th.  A little boy who was a friend of Steven, the owner of Doe Boi, came up to Ms. Borges and handed her a flyer.  On Friday, she told us that Doe Boi was attacked by another dog.  Doe Boi needed life saving surgery and the Vet would not let Doe Boi out until they paid $700.  They were very poor, and could only pay some of it.  We started to think of ways to help Doe Boi.  Then we came up with the idea to raise money for Doe Boi.  We started collecting money on Monday.  We raised $108 by Monday.  We asked the school on Tuesday at Mass.  And in those two days, we raised more than enough money to get Doe Boi out of the vet.  Two weeks later, we saw Doe Boi at school.  We all got to pet him.  We could all see that Doe Boi was glad to be home.  Thank you for all of your help to save Doe Boi.  We answered Steven’s prayers.  He’s very glad to have his best friend back.

Welcome the month of May!  Today is Teacher Appreciation Day and we celebrated the hard work and dedication of our teachers by saying “thank you” at morning assembly and honored them with a lunch organized by the PTG.  Many thanks to Linda Hill, Kim Sahouria and Theresa Boone for working to make the lunch so wonderful.

The last month of school is filled with many highlight activities that look to you and your families for presence and participation.  My hope is that most families already have the following May activities “set” in their calendars:

Request for Prayers:  Please pray for the grandmother of Jason Russell, grade 1 who is in the hospital.  Also, please pray for our parishioners the Thudium family as they mourn the loss of their husband and father Scott who was called home to our Lord on Sunday.

Progress Reports were sent home last Friday.  If you have a question or concern regarding your child’s progress grade please contact the child’s specific teacher for the specific subject.  Teachers can be reached most efficiently via email – first initial + last name @csdo.org.  Remember progress reports are an opportunity to encourage improvement where needed and solidify areas of achievement.

EIGTH GRADE REMINDER

Please make sure all bills have been paid up by May 30th including PPP hours. Final transcripts will not be sent to the high schools if money is owed. This could create problems for your student so please complete any financial commitments. Thank you.

REGISTRATION FOR RETURNING STUDENTS

The registration fee is $325.00 per child + additional fees for the upper grades were due last month.  All fees are due by Thursday, June 7.  This is the absolute last day.  If more time is needed, you have to talk to the principal, Mrs. Trombettas.  As per the Contract for Tuition no fees for 2012-2013 will be accepted until all 2011 – 2012 fees (PPP hours, delinquent tuition, daycare) have been paid in full.

BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF PTG

Studies show that students are more successful in schools when parents are involved in their education. Parent involvement and support makes a great deal of difference in a child’s school performance. Children respond positively to school just knowing that their parents are an active part of their school.

One avenue for parents to truly make a difference in the school community is to be a member of the PTG Board. The PTG Board has been very instrumental in generating funds for plant improvement and enrichment programs for our children.  All of these contributions and the many more behind the scene acts of volunteerism are a valued asset that makes our school so successful. Your continued support and involvement in the school can be seen in the successes of our children.

If you are interested in being an active member of PTG and becoming a part of its governing board, please plan on attending our next PTG meeting. Thank you for all your support in our school. Please seriously consider becoming a part of the PTG Board and continue the tradition of strong parental involvement at St. John School.

ALTAR SERVERS NEEDED

The St. John’s Church is looking for children, 4^th Grade and up, who would be interested in becoming Altar Servers. Altar Servers play an important part in the Church to help the Mass run smoothly. You must be baptized and have received 1st communion to be eligible.  You will receive training on your duties of Altar Serving.   If you are interested, please call Mrs. Brown (510) 234-2244 if your child would be interested in this worthwhile ministry.

I pray that the Easter break afforded all your families well deserved rest and relaxation.  The children arrived back at school yesterday with exuberance and ready to be full present –truly fantastic!  We welcome Mrs. Brown back to our front office and truly cannot thank Mrs. Clabby enough for all of her hard work and dedication in Mrs. Brown’s absence.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION 7TH – 12TH GRADE IMMUNIZATIONS

Students entering Grades 7 – 12 in the state of California will need to show proof of the Tdap booster shot (this shot protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and also pertussis (whooping cough) before starting school next year.

Your student WILL NOT be allowed to start school this fall without written documentation of this vaccine from your child’s doctor.  Enclosed in today’s family envelope is an information sheet on “What Parents need to know”.  Be sure to read all the information about the New 7th – 12th grade California Immunization Law and make your doctor appointments ASAP for the booster shot required by the state.

FINAL TUITION PAYMENT

For families utilizing the 10-month payment option, your final tuition payment for the 2011 – 2012 school year is due on May 20th.  If you are on the 11th month payment option, your final payment will be due June 20th.  All families must have their tuition accounts paid in full by this date.  If you are in need of an extended payment plan you must contact the school office to make arrangements.  Current students will not be considered re-registered for the 2012 – 2013 school year as long as this year’s tuition is unpaid.

LOST AND FOUND

The Lost and Found container is OUT OF CONTROL.  Please, Please, Please come by and see if any of the items belong to your children.  We have a lot of non-uniform clothing in the bin also.  Please check these items also.  Please remember to check your jackets on a regular basis.  Sometimes people take some jackets home by mistake that don’t belong to them and they have names on them.  Please, remember to return theses jackets as soon as you realize they belong to someone else.  There are plenty of jackets in the lost and found that do not have names on them that people are more than welcome to have.  Please do not keep jackets that have names on them.  Parents spend a lot of money on the jackets and would like to get them back in a timely manner and in good condition.  Thank You.

St. John’s 11th Annual Vacation Bible Day Camp June 25-29

Adventures on Promise Island looks to be a fantastic, fun time!

Another Station for Fun and Games will be enjoyed at Fun Time Falls. We are very excited to have Carol Mancinne-Shafer join us once again as Station Leader along with her son Jacob as the Assistant Station Leader. Carol has been a great

asset to our ministry volunteering for ten of our eleven years. Carol has done an amazing job helping with our Youth Ministry and as our Confirmation Team  Leader.

Jacob has been with us every year starting as a camper and last year assisted as a wonderful actor as well as a Crew Leader.  You might even see Jacob sing with our Youth Choir at our 9:30 a.m. mass.

TALENT SHOW NEWS!

This year’s talent show is May 11th.  The show starts at 7pm and the doors open at 6pm.  All children are free and admission for adults is $2.00.  If your child wants to participate in the talent show, registration forms were sent home in last week’s Tuesday envelope (available on our website too) and are due on April 16th.  The first talent show practice is scheduled for Wednesday, April 18 in the school gymnasium.

Each day at Promise Island kids will participate in the excitement of Seaside Celebration, experience Bible stories about God’s promises at Lifeguard Lagoon, create service or craft projects at Project Pointe, enjoy snacks and learn more about God’s promises at the Coconut Café, and play great games at Fun Time Falls! And, through it all, they’ll discover God’s promises and His lifesaving love!

Amid the swaying palm trees, exotic wildlife, and welcoming sunshine, new friends at Promise Island—Kamalei, Hunter, and Madi—will help kids experience the powerful, unchanging promises of God. They’ll see Him at work in the lives of Old and New Testament Bible people and realize that God’s promises are for us too! Kids will discover that God promises to be with us, to care about us, to give us what we need, to save us, and to answer us!

St. John the Baptist 8th grader Awarded Salesian Scholarship

Congratulations are in order for our 8th grader Kathleen Campos who was awarded a $3,250 per year scholarship from Salesian High School.  The new scholarship is based on Kathleen’s high entrance exam score and will place her in honor and Advanced Placement courses at Salesian. Way to go Kathleen!

Catholic Schools Week is an occasion to celebrate one another and to support and promote Catholic School education.  Students dressed up on different days and enjoyed different festivities such as Pajama Day, Brainiac/Famous Person Day, Crazy Hair Day, Wacky Clothes Day, and Twin Day.

St. John Students brought in their grandparents during Catholic Schools week to show them what they have done and what they are learning.  Grandparents spent the morning with their grandchildren in class and then went to the gym for lunch.

Students are heating different chemicals and observing the changes that occur upon heating.

The Endowment Event is almost here!  This year’s WESTERN THEME is sure to be enjoyed by all with country barbeque food and western dancing. Remember, there is childcare available and tickets can be purchased in the front office for only $40 each. This event is organized to be enjoyed by all St. John the Baptist families and is an integral component of our community’s ability to assist with making a St. John’s education affordable and accessible to all who desire to attend.  We also can’t thank Barbara Young and her committee enough for their hard work and dedication toward this event.

I will not be on campus next week as I will be on a WASC accreditation team for St. Elizabeth High School in Oakland.  Please keep the St. Elizabeth community in your prayers as their school program is reviewed.

DRESS CODE REMINDER

A reminder that school shoes for girls and boys must be:

• Athletic Shoes that are one color/combination of:  white, brown, black, navy or gray.  No bright colors or “light up” shoes.
• Dress Shoes that one color in black, brown, navy, gray – NO sandals, flip flops or boots

Non-Uniform sweatshirts and/or jackets may not be worn in the School Buildings

St. John the Baptist School Annual Endowment Event

Tuition alone does not cover the actual cost of a Saint John’s education, a financial fact that makes annual giving crucial to ensuring the excellence of our programs.

The Parent Teacher Group (PTG), Athletic Club, and School Board sponsor annual fundraising efforts to support academic and co-curricular programs.  Last year, their combined efforts raised over $30,000 to support school programs.  Achieving Saint John the Baptist’s educational goals requires an ongoing commitment of time, treasure, and talent from our school community. Thanks to the level of support from our community, and friends, our school is flourishing. Our contributors can take tremendous pride in their role in making the school such a special place.

On March 24, 2012, St. John’s will have its annual dinner dance and auction to raise money for the Endowment Fund.

The Endowment Fund provides tuition assistance and helps the school offer an enriched curriculum and maintain a diverse student body. Over the past five years the Endowment Fund has help to sponsor field trips, music programs, service learning projects, as well as, purchase computers, science lab materials and art supplies.

Tax-deductible contributions to our Endowment Fund offset the program costs of educating our children, and provide tuition assistance to deserving families.

Your support of this event is so important.  Please know that any and every contribution you make toward this event will go far in education and enriching the lives of our children.

ENROLLMENT APPLICATIONS

Enrollment applications for new students are now in the office or on our website at:  www.stjohnec.org.  If you know of a family interested in sending their children to St. John’s, please have them call or come by the office for an application.  We are currently accepting applications and testing for kindergarten.  Please call the office to schedule testing for new students in other grades (510) 234-2244.

Applications for Tuition Assistance

Applications for diocesan and school tuition assistance are now in the office. Please pick up an application packet and mail them to the address on the application.  All Tax documentation and wage information must be included with your application when mailed to ensure that everything is received by the deadlines.  Please apply for all tuition assistance that is available:  FACE, PACE (Schools), and Basic Fund (Application available in the office).  If you don’t qualify for one, you might qualify for another.    If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the office.

YEARBOOK CORNER

There are limited number of yearbooks available and they are going fast?  Don’t miss out, buy your yearbook today.  When the yearbooks are gone, they are gone!!!! A FRIENDLY REMINDER

If there is anything that you want to go in the weekly Tuesday memo, it must be E-mailed or given to the office no later than the Friday before.  If given later than that it will not go out until the following Tuesday memo.  If you have important flyers that need to go out, we will be sending the Tuesday Envelopes home on the last Tuesday of the month.  We are still trying to stay “Green”, so please only do this if necessary.  We will still be putting everything on line.   If you have any questions, Please call the Secretary, Karen Brown @ (510) 234-2244

VACATION BIBLE CAMP

St. John’s the Baptist Children’s Religious Education Program announces it’s 11th Annual Vacation Bible Day Camp;

“Adventures on Promise Island”.

Each day at Promise Island kids will participate in the excitement of Seaside Celebration, experience Bible stories about God’s promises at Lifeguard Lagoon, create service or craft projects at Project Pointe, enjoy snacks and learn more about God’s promises at the Coconut Café, and play great games at Fun Time Falls! And, through it all, they’ll discover God’s promises and His lifesaving love!

Amid the swaying palm trees, exotic wildlife, and welcoming sunshine, new friends at Promise Island—Kamalei, Hunter, and Madi—will help kids experience the powerful, unchanging promises of God. They’ll see Him at work in the lives of Old and New Testament Bible people and realize that God’s promises are for us too! Kids will discover that God promises to be with us, to care about us, to give us what we need, to save us, and to answer us! 

Your kids won’t want to miss this exciting adventure! Mark your calendar today! Registration forms and fees information will be available next month.
