How is our mission statement being lived out in our school? After some discussion with the faculty, we concluded that St. John the Baptist School has always had a good foundation in forming mature Christian persons who actively contribute to the community. This can be seen through our continuous and generous support of GRIP and our sister parish of St. Elizabeth in Haiti. In any crisis, our students respond quickly to pleas for donations, canned foods, and clothing. Though this is a good first step, the faculty and I concluded that sending checks alone is not enough. In order for our children to truly learn about social justice, we need to make a more personal connection to those less fortunate. From faculty discussions and an in-service provided by the Diocese of Oakland, we began to explore the concept of Service Learning where environmental issues and outreach to the less fortunate becomes integrated into the curriculum and way of life in the school. The second graders under the direction of their teacher Ms. Chaine, have taken the lead in this area. Last year, they took an active role in studying the plant and animal life of Baxter Creek. In learning about the creek, they also became involved in learning about ecologically sound practices that protect and preserve the environment. Their studies were awarded with a $2,000 grant to continue their environmental studies. This year the second graders will also continue with the Garden Project. The Garden Project began three years ago. All students in the school collect food scraps from their lunches. The food scraps are then fed to red worms whose castings produce excellent fertilizer. The castings are collected and used in planter boxes where students grow fruits and vegetables. The second graders have adopted the garden. They plant seeds, tend the garden, and study the growth of plants throughout the year. From these two projects, the students learn science, math, and how to be good stewards of the earth. The Kindergarteners, under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Tan-Torres, are also making progress in the area of Service Learning through their collection for the children of St. Elizabeth Parish in Haiti. The children have learned about the severe poverty in Haiti. They have learned that just $3.00 could pay for a years tuition for one child. Each child was given a little tub to collect their own money for the children of Haiti. Every Friday the children brought in their tubs and counted the money. Through this project, they learn math, how to count coins, geography, and the importance of helping the less fortunate in other countries. This year the kindergarteners collected over $1700 for the children in Haiti. The seventh graders have adopted the GRIP center collecting food, clothing, and money for the homeless throughout the year. Seventh grade families along with their teacher, Mrs. States, take turns serving food to the homeless once a month. This year, we have all made a commitment to develop Service Learning Projects at all grade levels. Other classes will also be developing service projects that integrate what they are learning in the classroom to outreach projects that benefit our environment and our community. In this way we are truly living our mission to form mature Christian persons who actively, contribute to the community. Though we still have much to do in this area, I feel we are well on our way to achieving our goal. Sincerely, Terry Barber, Principal ENROLLMENT APPLICATIONS Enrollment applications for new students are now in the office. If your child wishes to receive hot lunch from the hot lunch program, you must go on-line and register for the program, choose your lunches for the month and then pay by check or credit card. Please do not send your child with $5.00 every day to buy hot lunch because there is no guarantee that they will have extra lunches available to purchase. The purchase of hot lunches is starting to get out of control (especially on pizza days). We also have a lot of children who have purchased lunches on an IOU basis (this is to be used only for emergencies) and have not paid their outstanding balance. Unfortunately, these children will not be allowed to receive another hot lunch on an IOU basis until their balance is paid. We have a lot of IOUs that need to be paid (approximately 20 students). Parents, if you know your child has gotten IOU lunches in the past and have not paid, please pay your IOU balances as soon as possible. These outstanding balances are not good to have on our records and we want to stay in good standings with the lunch program, Childrens Choice. ANNOUNCING BOYS CYO SAND VOLLEYBALL!
