Philosophy
The Athletic Program at St. John School is one dimension of its total ministry to youth. St. John Athletic Program justifies its existence only if it makes better Christians of its participants. The emphasis is not on the number of games won or lost, but on the participants’ attitude in victory or defeat. Learning how to lose is just as important as learning how to win. Learning how to win graciously is more important than winning itself. The Athletic Program serves the needs of all youth. The program will enable the gifted to excel, the less gifted to participate and improve.
Goals
The primary goal of the Athletic Program at St. John School is to provide student/athletes the opportunity to learn physical skills and fitness, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and respect of others on their own team and the opposing team. The Athletic Program at St. John School will also promote the following list of personal development goals for the student/athlete.
Provide a sense of personal satisfaction and accomplishment that is intended to increase self- esteem and social acceptance.
Provide an environment for the student/athlete to learn the importance of having set a goal, or having a goal set, and achieving the goal through practice.
Provide an environment for all student/athletes to achieve some measure of success.
Allow the student/athlete to learn and understand the concept of teamwork.
Develop the principles of fair play and sportsmanship.
Learn how to have patience with and tolerance of those of lesser ability.
ParentParticipation
The success of the Athletic Program at St. John School lies with the parents who volunteer their time and expertise in support of the Athletic Program. With out parent participation, some Athletic Program sport event may not become a reality at St. John School, even though enough student/athletes are available to comprise a complete team.
